Keeping Your Home Warm and Safe: Heating Safety and Maintenance Tips from Chaseburg Co-Op

As the winter months approach, ensuring your home stays warm and comfortable is a top priority. At Chaseburg Co-Op, we offer various methods to keep your family cozy, from propane and Cenex fuel oils to Staggs fuel pellets. Alongside providing these essential heating solutions, we prioritize your safety with comprehensive guidelines and services. Here’s how you can maintain heating safety and efficiency this season.

Propane: A Reliable and Efficient Choice

Propane is a popular and efficient option for home heating. We offer propane at competitive prices, with our Summer-Fill prepay program available every summer to help you plan for the winter season. However, it’s crucial to handle propane with care and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents.

Propane Safety Tips:

  • Recognize Propane’s Odor: Propane is odorless in its natural state, but an odorant called ethyl mercaptan is added for safety. It’s essential to recognize this smell, often described as similar to rotten eggs, to detect leaks.
  • Understand Propane Vapor: Propane vapor is heavier than air and can accumulate in low areas such as basements or crawl spaces. Be aware of these potential accumulation points.
  • Prevent Odor Fade: Factors like air, water, or rust in the tank can cause odor fade, making leaks harder to detect. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent this issue.

In Case of a Leak:

  • Evacuate the building immediately without using any electrical devices or phones that could spark.
  • Move to a safe area and call Chaseburg Co-Op.
  • Wait for service personnel to declare the building safe before re-entering.

Fuel Oil Options: Cenex Fuel

Chaseburg Co-Op provides #1 and #2 Cenex fuel oils to suit your heating needs. These fuels are designed to deliver optimal performance for your home heating system.

Out of Gas? Here’s What to Do

Running out of gas can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous. Follow these steps to ensure safety and prompt service:

  1. Close the Service Valve: Immediately shut off the service valve on your propane tank.
  1. Call Us: Contact Chaseburg Co-Op at 608-483-2194.
  1. Be Present: Ensure a responsible adult is home for our personnel to check the entire gas system and relight pilots. This is a National Fire Protection Association requirement.

Avoid Additional Charges:

  • Scheduled delivery customers won’t face extra charges for out-of-gas calls.
  • Will-call, COD, or delinquent accounts may incur charges for same-day delivery, leak tests, and after-hours trips.

Agricultural and Commercial Fuels

Beyond home heating, Chaseburg Co-Op supports your agricultural and commercial fuel needs with Cenex premium diesel options like Ruby Fieldmaster and Roadmaster XL. These fuels provide more power and better fuel economy, essential for the demands of modern engines.

At Chaseburg Co-Op, customer and employee safety is our number one priority.
